SIES Welcome back to School 2013-2014

Dear SIES Parents,
First of all, thank you for helping our school year begin so smoothly and positively. As I have visited classrooms, the lunchroom and the recess field I have been very pleased to see students talking with one another, asking great questions, listening, and using good manners! These are all such important ingredients to lifelong learning and success! Way to go! Next week is just as important as the first week. Please plan to attend Open House to learn about your child’s classroom guidelines. See the schedule below. Open House will begin in the cafeteria. If needed, childcare is available for school aged students. Parking is available on the playground off Myrick Rd. Do not park on Rifle Range Rd. This week I am asking that all families, both returning and new, carve out some time toreview the parent/student handbook. You will find the 2013-2014 handbooks on our website at Monday, students will walk to class without parents. SIES staff will be stationed throughout every hallway to assist students if needed. Plan to arrive before 7:25 if you are dropping off in the car line. The carline and walk-up side walk close at 7:33 sharp and students must be in their classrooms by 7:35 ready to start the day. Our goal is to have100% of students on time this week. I will report back next week and let you know exactly how we did! Permission slips for our marine biology field trips will be sent home in the backpacks this week! Our kindergarten and first grade cluster will seine and beach comb with naturalist, Jim Koenig. The second and third grade cluster will examine the complex ecosystem of Caper’s Island, and the 4th and 5th grade classes will learn about conservation efforts on Bull Island. Additionally, all grade levels, including Child Development Blend, will participate in Sand Castle Day. Get ready for some great learning in these outdoor classrooms! I hope that you will take time as a family team to rest-up and prepare for the weeks ahead. Starting of the year on a positive, organized note is so important.
Warmly, Susan R. King, Principal
